The New Orleans Saints agreed to a one-year contract with free agent offensive tackle Storm Norton. per his agents at JL Sports. Norton, 28, joined the NFL in 2017 as an undrafted free agent from Toledo, initially signing with the Detroit Lions. He’s bounced around quite a bit over the years since – he’s spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Wildcats of the XFL in 2020 – but he’s best known for his three-year streak with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Norton started most of the 2021 season with proper tackle for the Chargers, but he primarily played as a backup swing tackle on both right and left flanks. The Pro Football Focus charts accused him of allowing 59 quarterback pressures (9 sacks) and drawing 6 penalty flags in his only season as a starter, so he’s probably not someone the Saints want to play heavy minutes.
Still, that’s a good experience on the depth chart, especially if it’s a one-year rental. The terms of Norton’s contract with the Saints have not been disclosed, but it is unlikely to be a significant sum of money. Norton could have returned to the Chargers with a restricted free-agent tender worth just over $2 million, but they chose to let him go. If he didn’t even get that much per year with New Orleans, he shouldn’t be considering the comp picks formula for the 2024 draft. If he signs for the veteran’s minimum, which seems likely, it will have little impact on the salary cap. But stay tuned.
