Kelly’s Country Meat Block and Diner may have had a setback after a Tuesday night fire resulted in a “total loss” of the kitchen, according to the restaurant’s Facebook account, but they will still open Thursday morning.
A post on Kelly’s Diner’s Facebook page on Wednesday night informed customers and fans that the store’s butcher shop will be open and that plate lunches will continue on a to-go basis for the time being.
Tuesday night’s fire was quickly dealt with by Opelousas police and firefighters, and while it was contained, the restaurant’s kitchen suffered major damage, the site noted in a reply to one of the comments on its original post.

Kelly’s Country Meat Block and Diner
Kelly’s is a 2-in-1 business, with the diner being half and a meat block the other. According to their Facebook page:
Family-owned for 33 years, Kelly’s Diner is operated by Kelly and Elaine Cormier. All recipes were developed by Elaine Cormier and Cindy Leger, who runs the diner. The menu consists of classic Cajun cuisine with an emphasis on preparing homemade dishes with specialty meats available from the meat market next to the diner. This “hole in the wall” is a staple of Louisiana’s former capital, as many of the diners return day after day to sit down and enjoy homemade Cajun fare, such as pork chops, corn and crab chowder, gumbo, assorted po’ boys (e.g. fried shrimp, fried oysters, roast beef, etc.) and our hugely popular barbecue lunches of chicken, brisket, pork steak and pork ribs are all marinated in Mrs. Elaine’s homemade barbecue sauce. The friendly atmosphere and soulful Cajun food offer guests a diner they can step into and feel right at home.
Kelly’s is a very popular restaurant in Opelousas with many fans in and around the area. It is routinely rated highly by its fans. It gets an average of 4.6 out of 5 stars on Google and 4.8 out of 5 on Facebook.
“Everything I’ve ever eaten at Kelly’s has been amazing,” wrote one customer. “Everyone was so nice and friendly and the restaurant was very clean!!! Highly recommend Kelly’s Diner!”
