Students of Iberia, St. Martin and St. Mary Parish with aspirations in government and public service now have the opportunity to serve.
The Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) accepts membership applications from high school students who have an interest in representing the voices of young people across the state. There is still time to apply for LYAC membership and experience the legislative process firsthand.
LYAC is an annually appointed body composed solely of undergraduate students concerned with issues affecting Louisiana’s youth. The purpose of LYAC is to facilitate communication between youth and the legislature and to provide students with a unique opportunity to participate in the work of state government.
The Council investigates and addresses a wide range of issues relevant to young people, such as education, mental health, civic engagement, the environment and school safety.

Council members are selected from a large pool of applicants who demonstrate a strong interest in civic engagement. The 31 members include three students representing each of the six congressional districts and the remainder serving generally. Applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 19 and enrolled in a public or private high school, charter school, home school, or GED skills program during the 2023-2024 school year.
Interested students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible in order to take the opportunity to learn more about local government and how to make a difference at both the state and national levels.
Application deadline is Friday March 24th. The application can be accessed at civiced.louisiana.gov and then by clicking LYAC at the top of the page. All applicants must submit two letters of recommendation in addition to the eight short essay questions and the application form.
