Russell M Nelson was born to a Mormon family in Salt Lake City in the decade following World War I. As a result, his upbringing was deeply religious and conservative. He supported his traditional environment and upheld his family’s religious and faith traditions. He attended Church Sunday School and was baptized as a member of the LDS church at the age of 16. He attended LDS Business College in addition to high school and earned his B.A. and M.D. from the University of Utah.

He finished the four-year M.D. program at the University of Utah in just three years, ranking first in his class. Following that, he went to the University of Minnesota and participated in the world’s first open heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass. For his contributions, he was awarded a Ph.D. He then served in the military as a Medical Corp for 20 months before retiring as a Captain.

He returned and spent a year at Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the faculty of the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1955. He was a legendary surgeon in Utah, performing the state’s first open-heart surgery, thoracic surgery, and pediatric surgery. He performed many unusual procedures and was honored by being elected president of the Society for Vascular Surgery in 1975. He is also the recipient of a professorship.

For many years, he also served as a leader of the LDS Church in various spells. The Church frequently sought his advice as an apostle or negotiator. He was the primary delegate to the Parliament on World Religions in 1991. He traveled around the world preaching and distributing charity. With the death of former President Monson on January 2, 2018, he assumed the presidency of the Church.
