Falling power lines create a huge traffic reserve on the Gulf Highway

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Downed power lines caused huge traffic backups for drivers on the Gulf Expressway after Tuesday’s severe weather moved in the area.

According to Houston Transstar, the lines closed three front lanes of the southern bypass near Fuqua. Only one lane can pass. Closed lanes were initially reported around 4:30 p.m., and delays had accumulated hours by the evening rush hour.

ABC13 has heard reports of at least one viewer who said he spent up to three hours sitting in the thick of stopped traffic.

Interstate 3 is available as an alternative, but expect additional delays in the area. Power outages can affect traffic lights, too.
