Chelsea face a crunching decision to replace either Mendy or Kepa

Chelsea are set to bring in a new goalkeeper this January as they plan a January overhaul.

From a neutral perspective, you might think to yourself that Chelsea are spoilt for choice between the sticks as they have two of the best shot-stoppers in the league – Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy. And you’d be right in thinking so, but it turns out the Blues are not in agreement.

According to a report from the Sun, Graham Potter wants to upgrade his goalkeeping option, which means that one of Kepa or Mendy will have to be dropped to third choice. Truth be told, neither of them should even be a second choice as they can get game time pretty much anywhere in Europe.

It does seem to me like there is an issue in prioritising at Chelsea. Of course, I don’t know the ins and outs of what is going through Potter’s thought process but surely it does not take a genius to realise it is Chelsea’s attack which is the problem.

The Blues thought that signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would fix all their issues but it has not. The Gabon international, to put it bluntly, is past his best. And that’s not to mention his mentality which is awful – when things don’t go his way, he doesn’t like it. This is not the kind of player you want leading the line. Kai Havertz is also woefully inconsistent.

With all this in mind, the January transfer window would have been the perfect opportunity for Graham Potter and company to fix the Chelsea front-line and get them firing again. It is wasted spending power to bring in a goalkeeper but maybe it’ll work in their favour in which case, I will gladly eat my words.
