Michigan fans send panic meter off the charts over Illinois’ upset bid

Michigan entered the week with a clear path to the College Football Playoff, but Illinois looking to play the spoiler sent Wolverines fans into a complete panic.

Heading into Week 12, the stage is set for Michigan to take control of its own college football playoff destiny. But Illinois had other plans for what was happening in Ann Arbor.

Despite entering the game with the Wolverines after two straight losses, the Fighting Illini showed plenty of fighting on Saturday as they survived some long drives at Michigan and were only four points behind going into halftime. But they used a solid two-way effort to take a lead in the third quarter and were comfortably up 17-13 as they had the ball early in the fourth quarter.

And with that, Wolverines fans began to panic like never before, as it seemed like their college football playoff chances were blazing before their very eyes.

Michigan fans panicked over Illinois’ pinch-hit attempt, a potential disaster

If panic caused earthquakes, Michigan’s message boards might have broken the Richter scale.

The funnest part of all this scare was that the game wasn’t over yet. There was still a full quarter (or thereabouts) left for the Wolverines to mount a comeback and stay perfect for the season. However, there are still fans already declaring the season over.

Even crazier, a loss would hurt Michigan’s chances, but it wouldn’t end their season either. With a win over Ohio State next week, Jim Harbaugh’s team is all the way to the Big Ten Championship game and may still have a clear path to the playoff.

But that’s college football fans for you — they’re often about to lose it at any moment, especially if a CFP race is involved.
