If you already own a PS4, it is useful to know how to use a PS4 controller on Steam as well.
Back in 2018, Valve officially brought support for the PS4 DualShock 4 console to Steam – and it’s actually impressively customizable.
Not only will you plug and play supported games from your gamepad (with a bit of work), but you can also have them control your mouse – a long Windows trip – or have camera movements made by tilting the gamepad.
However, learning how to use a PS4 controller on Steam isn’t quite as simple as plugging in an Xbox One console and jumping into the game of your choice — especially if you want to use it wirelessly.
But we’re here to help, so here’s our guide on how to use your PS4 controller on Steam.
1. Connect the DualShock 4 التحكم
If you’re happy with it wired, just connect the microUSB from the board to your computer, then skip to step 10.
2. Check that your computer has Bluetooth
If you want to use your DualShock 4 controller wirelessly with Steam, there are a few more steps. First of all, make sure that your computer has Bluetooth technology. If not, Sony sells Official DualShock 4 USB Adapter (Opens in a new tab), although it is difficult to find them nowadays. Fortunately, any old dongle that supports Bluetooth 2.0 and above should suffice.
3. Click on the Start button, then Settings
In Windows, press the Start button, then press Settings.
4. Tap Devices
From the next set of options, select Devices.
5. Turn on Bluetooth, then add a Bluetooth device
Make sure Bluetooth is turned on, then tap Add Bluetooth or another device.
6. Select Bluetooth
Simply choose the top option in this list.
7. PS4 controller pair
Now take your PS4 DualShock 4 controller and hold down the PS button (the button between the analog stick) and the Share button (located on the top and right of the D-pad). When the light bar on the console begins to flash, it is ready to be detected by your computer.
8. Select Wireless Controller
Back on Windows, the PS4 panel will now appear in the list of devices ready to pair. It will be called the very generic Wireless Controller, so when that appears, click on it.
9. Look for the message “Device is ready”
If all goes well, you’ll see this. Success!
10. Go to Steam settings
Sign in to Steam. Tap the Steam menu in the upper-right corner, then tap Settings.
11. Select the Steam console
In the submenu that appears, tap Controller, then General Controller Settings.
12. Check PlayStation Configuration Support
Check the box that says “PlayStation Configuration Support” to prepare it for the final stage of the process.
13. Customize Your PS4 Controller for Steam
Your PS4 pad is now ready to use in Steam, but to ship it big, go back to the previous menu and play with both the big picture and desktop configuration. This will allow you to customize your console in some really interesting ways both in the game and in general when using Steam.
In addition to resetting each button and adjusting the sensitivity of the thumb sticks, you can also take advantage of the controller’s unique touchpad and gyroscope in a myriad of ways.
Want your DualShock 4’s touchpad to act like a mouse? Go for it. How about controlling the in-game camera by simply moving the controller? You can make it happen. If you like to tweak every possible parameter when setting up your controls for gaming, Steam’s DualShock 4 features may keep you occupied for hours.
